NEW CLARK CITY, CAPAS, TARLAC — Local virus experts welcomed an announcement from American biotech company Moderna regarding a possible Omicron vaccine following positive results from its clinical tests of the new vaccine that targets both the original Covid strain and the more contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Based on a recent statement, Moderna officials said they see the shot as its “lead candidate” for a booster this fall and to boost their claim of its possible efficacy against Omicron, they disclosed that the so-called ‘bivalent’ vaccine was tested in a trial of 814 adults and it showed to produce 1.75 times more Omicron-specific neutralizing antibodies, which have the power to prevent infection, compared to Moderna’s original Spikevax vaccine.

They added that all of the participants previously received three doses of Spikevax and then slightly more than half went on to get a fourth dose of the bivalent shot while the rest got another dose of Spikevax. Antibody levels were tested one month later.

“Magandang balita ito sa kabila na ang mga clinical outcome ay maaaring lumabas pa sa huling bahagi ng taon,” a virologist from the Virology Science and Techonology Institute of the Philippines in Capas, Tarlac.
Based on latest developments, breakthrough infections have risen since Omicron became dominant late lasty year with vaccine-makers hoping to restore efficacy of anti-Covid drugs they have developed to previous levels, even as first-generation vaccines continue to protect well against severe disease and death.
