MANILA — Being her father’s daughter, it may be expected that incoming vice-president ‘Inday’ Sara Duterte-Carpio would follow in the footsteps of graduating President Rodrigo Duterte who advocated for addressing the problem of illegal drugs and criminality.

In an earlier interview, the older Duterte also floated the possibility of tapping his eldest daughter to take over his banner campaign against illegal narcotics, saying “this time, if I’m gone, I will just tell Inday to take over . . . Get this job.”

The outgoing chief executive was graphic in his desire to urge his daughter to take the cudgels and impose stricter measures against the illegal drug trade, particularly in schools where drug syndicates have been operating and victimizing young students.

“Just take a look at the Department of Education (DepEd), there are many children there. Do not allow contamination (of illegal drugs) there,” he stressed in reference to his daughter’s nomination as secretary of the education agency.

Duterte-Carpio will be assuming as DepEd chief on 30 June, the same day Duterte steps down from office.

Still, the former Davao City mayor, who has been tagged as ‘The Punisher’ for his firm stand against criminals and drug personalities, disclosed categorically that he would continue to wage war against illegal drugs even after he steps down from office by the end of the month.

“I’m about to leave. I unburdened myself to you. In a few days, I will no longer be president. But I will continue to operate against illegal drugs,” he pointed out.

But in continuing his advocacy, Duterte enthused he is still clueless about how he would do it: “I don’t know yet how, but I will continue to operate against the drug menace. Either you kill me or I will kill you, simple as that. I will not allow it and even as an ex of a former president, I will not let you destroy society or our children. I will kill you. I don’t care.”
