ILOILO City – The city government today (Monday, 13 June 2022) opened its first dog pound and shelter that will house stray dogs and abandoned animals roaming in the city.
According to Mayor Jerry Treñas, the dog pound will house stray dogs and animals while we look for responsible owners to take good care of them. “We will maintain a no-kill policy for these animals.”
The city’s dog pound and dog shelter are located at the Calajunan Sanitary Landfill in the Mandurriao district.
The facility will also employ an adoption policy to help the abandoned animals find their new homes. “Our stray dogs and animals also have a right to live,” he said.
The dog shelter will not only address the increasing number of strays in the city but will also prevent the spread of rabies and other illnesses.
“If these strays remain unchecked, they may become harmful to residents as there are reported cases of animal bites among pedestrians,” Treñas emphasized.
Students from Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC) Molo Campus also provided support in the construction of the dog pound by constructing the cages, walls, and roofing, as well as beautification and landscaping works, as part of their on-the-job training. (ai/mtvn)
