MANILA — Quezon City will be hosting the biggest pride marches in the Philippines this coming Saturday, June 25, 2022.

In a press conference held at the Quezon City Hall Sunken Garden on Monday, June 20, Pride PH, a coalition of various LGBTQIA+ organizations, confirmed that they choose QC to be the host city of “Alab for Love: Pride PH Festival.”

The said festival is a nationwide event with simultaneous activities in Northern Luzon, some parts of the Visayas, and Mindanao. The QC activity aims to cater LGBTQIA+ people and supporters in the northern part of Metro Manila. Its theme is “#OnePride: Coming Out Together for the Philippines.”

“We had no other city in mind for this — only Quezon City. We all know that they are very supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community. In fact, it is the first city to implement an Anti-Discrimination Ordinance. So, it is only fitting to do the Pride PH Festival in Quezon City,” says Mela Habijan, Miss Trans Global 2020 and lead convenor of Pride PH.

Mayor Joy Belmonte, on the other hand, expressed her gratitude to the LGBTQIA+ community because it supports the advocacy of the QC government for inclusive, diversified, and equal governance with a strong foundation for people’s participation.

“Nakikiusap ako sa mga kaibigan sa media, sana tulungan niyo si Ms. Teta (Tirona) na i-promote ang activity na ito [I called on our friends in the media, please help Ms. Teta Tirona to promote this activity],” the mayor said.

She pointed out that they are expecting tens of thousands of people to attend the pride march and be one in solidarity with the QC-LGU.

“We are very proud and honored to serve as host of Alab for Love Pride PH Festival. We also like to thank the LGBTQIA+ community for choosing us as the venue for their event,” Belmonte disclosed.

“This is a testament of Quezon City’s status as a staunch ally of the LGBTQIA+ community,” she added.

Belmonte assured the LGBTQIA+ communities that the city government is always with them to support their endeavors.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, People’s Council of Quezon City (PCQC) Chairman Brian Lu said they are much willing to join and support #OnePride campaign.

While Tirona, QC’s Tourism head, also announced that QC-LGU will also administer COVID-19 vaccination and provide free HIV screening to attendees during the event. (ai/mtvn)
