MANILA – Consumers are now wary that the price of eggs in the coming weeks may soon reach from P10 to P15 per piece as announced by Agricultural Sector Alliance of the Philippines Inc. (AGAP) party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones.

Briones said that the rise in price of eggs may come due to the high cost of production and cases of bird flu prevalent in the country.

He also revealed that the shortage in egg production now is partly due to the oversupply of eggs in the past months which led egg producers to halt production to minimize their losses then.

Currently, the price of eggs in the market ranges from ₱5 to ₱7 depending on the size.

Egg has been regarded as one of the staple breakfast foods in the country. It is one of the favorite foods by many, be it scrambled, sunny side up, hard or soft boiled or simply an omelet with lots of spices. Some even stuff it in “pandesal” while pairing it with fried rice and coffee.

It is also a basic ingredient in baking bread and other desserts such as cakes and other pastries.

The bakers and the ordinary household are among those who are instantly affected by any increase in the price of an egg. However, recently, an agricultural group warned the possibility of a huge increase on egg prices. (ai/mtvn)
