LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Like a mystery-thriller movie, an aground vessel suddenly caught fire in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday sending two of its hurt crewmen to the hospital.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) head Nagiel Bañacia said two of the crew members of MV Trans-Asia 1 were rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries during the fire.

The shipping firm said no one was hurt or injured during the fire.

Responding personnel of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Central Visayas (PCG 7) said there were eight persons on board — seven of whom were crew members and a security guard — when the MV Trans-Asia 1 caught fire around 1:55 a.m. on Saturday, July 16.

The PCG, however, stopped short in identifying the victims who were brought to the hospital for proper treatment.

It was gathered that the vessel was already aground about 100 meters from the shore of Barangay Punta Engaño during the onslaught of supertyphoon Odette in December 2021.

An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the fire.

Despite Bañacia’s claim, officials of Trans-Asia Shipping Lines Inc. (TASLI) assured that no one was reported hurt or injured during the fire.

In its statement on Saturday, the shipping firm said they are evaluating the extent of the damage on the vessel.

The vessel company also claimed that they are providing assistance to their personnel who were affected by the incident. (ai/mtvn)
