MANILA—In her recent revelation on Eat Bulaga’s segment “Bida Next,” a contest intended to look for a new host, Maegan Aquilar confessed that all is not good between her and her father, the singing icon Freddie Aquilar. Their relationship has been marred by her wrong decisions in the past. She also revealed that her children from different fathers are not living with her either.
“Kami rin ni Tatay, meron kaming distance right now. We’re not in good terms. Hindi kami okey because of the choices I made in my life. He doesn’t approve and it’s so hard to explain.
“Mahirap mag-explain, so ipinapasa-Diyos ko na lang din na one day, I could be fixed with my father as well,” Maegan narrated on the said “Bida Next” segment of Eat Bulaga about her relationship with her father who has not yet been talking to her up to this time.
Sometime in January 2021, Maegan posted a message of longing for her father Freddie on her Instagram account.
She said, “Nami-miss kita ‘tay…baka hindi na kita mayakap ng ganito ulit dahil marami na po ang nagbago sa mga buhay natin.
“How I wish I could just call you anytime, visit you anytime and hug you tight and tell you about my good days and bad days…
“I’m not as hard or cold as I may seem, may puso din po ako na nakakaramdam din at nakakaalala from time to time how happy and close we used to be before. I love you tatay.”
Freddie popularized the song “Anak” in 1978 which was translated to more than two hundred languages and became a global hit. It was his entry to the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival, which caught the attention of former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos and made a standing ovation after Freddie’s performance.
The soulful lyrics of “Anak” seem to be what is happening in the life of Maegan as she is living her father’s song. From her words, she is obviously in pain and in deep regrets from everything she told him sometime in May 2014. Now, she yearns for her father.
Maegan’s allegations were too heavy for any parent to bear, when she said that she and her children were driven away from their home where they used to live together, just because of rotten vegetables and a loan worth P1,500.
“Parang hindi na siya icon, parang hindi na siya Freddie Aguilar. Para na siyang squatter.
“Nagsisisi talaga ako na ipinagtanggol ko sila. Nagsisisi ako na tatay ko siya,” were the hurting words Maegan hurled at her father that time.
She also called her father “dirty old man” after Freddie married his 16-year old girlfriend in 2013 in a Muslim rite.
Despite all those allegations, Freddie did not retaliate on the issue and did not say a word against his daughter because of his love for her.
Freddie was more concerned about Maegan’s welfare so he chose to keep silent instead.
And now, after eight years, the singer-actress is trying to make ways so that their relationship can be renewed and go back to normal by posting reconciliatory messages for her father on social media. (ECD/MTVN)
