MANILA — Not just in times of war but even in times of peace and whenever natural disasters strike, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos sees the proposed revival of the mandatory Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program for senior high school students will help bolster the country’s capability in dealing with disasters.

Being in the so-called “ring of fire”, the Philippines can expect earthquakes and is often visited by typhoons, PBBM said in his weekly vlog that the ROTC is designed to train high school students not only for national defense preparedness but also for disaster response and emergency management.

“Mas marami rin tayong maihahanda na sibilyan para sa mga ganitong disaster response sa pamamagitan ng ROTC program dahil hindi lang naman national defense ang tinuturo sa kanila kundi disaster preparedness and capacity building para dito nga sa tinatawag na risk-related situations na itinuturo sa kanila,” PBBM said.

The Commander-in-Chief made the remark after a magnitude 7 earthquake hit Abra on Wednesday, which reportedly left 10 people dead and over 200,000 affected.

Earlier, the socialist humanist Maharlika Solidarity (MASO) praised PBBM for the proposal to reinstitute the ROTC.

Founded by a descendant of Lapu-Lapu on July 7 this year coinciding with the 130th foundation of the Katipunan, MASO said if ever ROTC is revived, it should include practical shooting and martial arts training.

The ROTC should also be strictly monitored to avoid hazing and inhumane treatment of students. (ai/mtvn)

“If countries like Israel and South Korea, their youth and even so-called beauty queens can ably defend their motherland, why can’t we in our own archipelago?” MASO convenor Khalid Mundo said. (ai/mtvn)
