MANILA — Some guys have all the luck, as Rod Stewart sings, and this includes George Erwin Garcia who has been appointed as chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) until 2029 by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Garcia was appointed only last March by then outgoing President Rodrigo Roa Duterte but he stepped down after the Commission on Appointments (CA) bypassed him last June shortly before PBBM won landslide in the recently-concluded polls and took over as Chief Executive.
“The President has appointed Mr. George Erwin Garcia as Chairman of the Commission on Elections. He has submitted Mr. Garcia’s name to the Commission on Appointments as required by law,” Press Secretary Rose Beatrix “Trixie” Cruz-Angeles confirmed in a statement.
Garcia’s appointment will still have to get the nod of the CA.
He replaced former chairman Saidamen Pangarungan whose confirmation was also bypassed by the CA.
If the proverbial Lady Luck continues to smile at him, Garcia will be Comelec chairman until February 2, 2029. (ai/mtvn)
