MANILA — For issuing an unauthorized resolution for the importation of an additional 300,000 metric tons of sugar, Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian has resigned and apologized to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Press Secretary Rose Beatrix “Trixie” Cruz-Angeles on Friday said Sebastian “profusely apologized” to the President in his letter dated August 11 for approving Sugar Order 4 without the prior consent of the Chief Executive who also concurrently sits as DA Secretary and chairman of the Sugar Regulatory Board (SRB).

“I sincerely offer my apologies, Your Excellency, for having approved Sugar Order No. 4 on your behalf, and through the authority you have vested upon me… I take accountability and responsibility for its consequences,” Sebastian said in his resignation letter.

He added: “Thus I humbly offer to be relieved of my delegated authorities and responsibilities in my capacity as chief of staff and undersecretary of the Department of Agriculture.”

To recall, Sugar Order No. 4, which supposedly authorized the importation of 300,000 metric tons of sugar into the country, was uploaded to the website of the Sugar Regulatory Administration.

Sebastian signed on behalf of the President who sits as concurrent DA Secretary.

Hours later, Malacañang denied the said document, saying the President rejected the proposal to import more sugar into the country. (ai/mtvn)
