LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — If Mayor Mike Rama can do it in Cebu City, why can’t Mayor Ahong Chan do it in this highly urbanized city? This question has been raised by many Oponganons as some 89,000 senior citizens in neighboring Cebu City on Saturday started receiving their lump sum for three months amounting to P3,000 each.

The Oponganons (residents in this city which was formerly known as Opon) expressed hopes that “Ahong will do a Mike” and will increase the cash aid for the senior citizens from P4,000 to P6,000 every six months.

For the reputed Queen City of the South, Dr. Ester Concha, head of the Cebu City Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), said the registered senior citizens will receive a lump sum of P3,000 covering the months of June, July, and August this year.

She added that the Cebu City government under the leadership of Rama has allocated P257 million worth of funds for the program.

At the same time, Concha reminded the elderly that authorization letters will not be entertained during the distribution.

To ensure that all senior citizens will get their cash aid, the DSWS chief said there will be on site distributions in all 80 barangays in the city for five days starting on Saturday, August 13.

She further said that for bedridden elderly, the DSWS will deliver the cash assistance in their respective houses.

Last June 16, the Lapu-Lapu city government gave its six months or midyear cash assistance to senior citizens amounting to P4,000 each while PWDs got P3,000 each. (ai/mtvn)
