MANDAUE CITY, Cebu — Due to heavy downpour and swelling of Butuanon river in this city, close to 200 families, including 208 children, lost their homes on Saturday.

Accordingly to this city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), on Sunday morning, August 14, the flood victims went back to their wrecked houses, trying to salvage some of their belongings, but had to return to their temporary evacuation centers at Umapad Elementary School where they spent Saturday overnight.

“They are now being taken care of by our social welfare department,” Mandaue CDRRMO chief Buddy Ybanez said.

He added that the evacuees were from Sitio Laray in Barangay Umapad whose houses were hit by floods caused by the heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon.

It was gathered that of the 722 people there, 208 are children and 18 were elderly adults.

Ybanez said the flooding was caused by the swelling of the Butuanon River.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Cebu City, seven families lost their homes after a landslide occurred in Sitio Tapoko Lessandra Miramonte, Barangay Pit-os due to continuous rains.
