BORBON, Cebu — Mayor Noel T. Dotillos has warned residents in Barangay Don Gregorio Antigua not to drink or wash clothes in a river that suddenly turned milky white here.

On Monday, August 22, officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas (DENR 7) also cautioned the residents after conducting water sampling in the river.

Don Gregorio Antigua barangay captain Margarito Ornopia Jr. said residents were alarmed upon seeing the water in the 13-kilometer river turn white around 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 21.

The river traverses five barangays in this 4th class municipality about 76 kilometers north of Cebu City.

Its milky-white “transformation” was noticed in Barangays Sagay, Bongoyan, parts of Poblacion, and all the way to Cadaruhan, which is facing the sea off Camotes Islands.

Ornopia bared that truck driver Elmer Degamo went to their barangay hall on Sunday and was confused that before the river turned milky-white, he was washing a flexi-bag there. (ai/mtvn)
