Gilas Pilipinas beats Qatar, moves to q’finals

MANILA — Living up to its name, Gilas Pilipinas displayed its mettle beating Qatar, 77-61, to move to the quarterfinals in the FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship at the Azadi Basketball Hall in Tehran, Iran on Monday night (Philippine time).

Mason Amos consistently led the way for the Philippines with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Jared Bahay pumped 15 points and three assists.

Joshua Coronel contributed nine points, three assists, and two rebounds, as Kyle Gamber tallied seven points, three rebounds, and three assists to help give the Philippines its second win in as many games.

James Nacua’s layup finally sealed Gilas’s victory over Qatar, from a 54-48 lead into a more comfortable 66-49 advantage with 6:52 to spare in the last quarter, where the Philippines scored 23 points and limited Qatar to just 13. (ai/mtvn)
