MANILA — Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri clarified on Thursday that Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez was not involved in the illegal importation of 300,000 metric tons of sugar.
“I absolutely do not believe that [Rodriguez] is part of this plan of coming out with an illegal order to import sugar,” Zubiri said.
“Why? Because he was the one who took [the matter] to the president and told the president about this particular plan, that they already signed an import order without the president’s approval,” he added.
Zubiri makes reference to Sugar Order No. 4, which was signed on August 8 by former Agriculture Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian on behalf of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (SRA).
Three former senior SRA officials who have since left their positions in the wake of the controversy also signed the importation order.
“If he was part of this plan, why would [the executive secretary] tell this to the president?” Zubiri said. (ai/mtvn)
