LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Rallying to their battlecry “Kaabag, dili babag” (Partnership, not obstacle), the city council here unanimously passed an ordinance authored by Councilor Annabeth “Mama Abeth” Cuizon increasing the burial assistance from the current maximum of P8,000 to P10,000.

Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on Friday, August 25, lauded such a move as he pointed out that this only proved that the Oponganon (Lapu-Lapu City resident) is the most important beneficiary when the executive and legislative branches of the city government unite.

“Opon” is the old name of this historic resort city.

“One example of the benefit of this unity is the increase in the city’s burial assistance to poverty-stricken families,” Chan said.

The mayor said the increase is provided in Section 3 of the “Ordinance institutionalizing the burial assistance program for indigent residents of the City of Lapu-Lapu and providing funds thereof.”

He added that the policy of the ordinance is in line with the policy of the State, as stated in Section 16 of the Local Government Code of 1991, which “mandates cities and LGUs to improve public morals, enhance economic prosperity and social justice, promote full employment among their residents, maintain peace and order and preserve the comfort and convenience of their inhabitants.” (ai/mtvn)
