BRUSSELS, Belgium — Despite beating world champion Arman ‘Mondo’ Duplantis and annexing his third straight gold in the process, Ernest John ‘EJ’ Obiena enthused that this is not enough to end his craving to give honor to the country and win more for his Filipino compatriots.

Obiena dealt the world’s top pole vaulter his first defeat at the Diamond League meet in Brussels but he downplayed his victory saying he merely had the breaks at the time: “It took a lot of luck, a good day and some excellent calls to beat Mondo.”

Obiena cleared 5.91 meters in his third attempt, outclassing his 22-year-old US-born opponent from Sweden who failed to pass the same height three times, falling to the mat on the third botched effort with a gaping mouth in stunned disbelief.

Before winning his fourth gold — and third straight — Obiena won at the Saint Endel City Jump in Germany last Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) and at the 2022 True Athletes Classic at the Manforter Stadio in Leverkusen, also in Germany, last Sunday (Monday in Manila),
