MANILA — The Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) recommended that the wearing of face masks outdoors or open spaces be made voluntary.
Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles immediately clarified that this is not yet a policy and is still subject to further study before being approved and implemented.
According to the recommendation, senior citizens and the immunocompromised are still encouraged to wear face masks.
In a press briefing in Malacañang, Department of Health (DOH) officer-in-charge Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the authorities are already developing a concept paper for the pilot testing of voluntary mask wearing in selected areas.
This is to see if the system can handle it or not.
Vergeire said the recommendation came about after several IATF members presented studies from other countries.
If approved, wearing face masks in outdoor and well-ventilated areas will be voluntary for low-risk individuals.
