PCUP, PAGCOR partnership gain traction in helping urban poor

QUEZON CITY, Metro Manila — The Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) is set to distribute food packs to the urban poor in several barangays in Aklan, Negros Occidental, Sultan Kudarat, Tawi-Tawi, and Zamboanga Sibugay.

Former media man and PCUP National Capital Region (PCUP-NCR) commissioner Rey Galupo said the distribution of the food packs will coincide with the mini caravans that will be held in barangays Manoc-Manoc in Malay, Aklan; Taloc in Bago City, Negros Occidental; and Poblacion in Sultan Kudarat; and the towns of Bongao in Tawi-Tawi and Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Galupo expressed gratitude to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) “for its generosity and readiness to assist other government agencies and entities who are helping the less fortunate sectors of our society.”

“PAGCOR has always been at the forefront of the government’s effort to help the needy and the deprived. It is with this thought that PCUP sought and reaffirm their partnership, which had been ongoing for so many years,” Galupo said.

The food pack consisted of two kilos of rice, four pieces of canned goods, a pack of instant coffee, and powdered chocolate and would be distributed to 2,500 beneficiaries.

“Makakaasa ang ating mga maralitang taga-lungsod na patuloy tayong magsasagawa ng mga proyekto at programang makakatulong, gaano man ito kaliit, upang matugunan ang kanilang mga pangangailangan at ilapit sa kanilaang pamahalaan sa pamamagitan ng iba’t ibang ahensya ng pamahalaan,” the commissioner added.

Eric Balcos, PAGCOR assistant vice president for community relations and service, said his agency welcomes the opportunity to tie up with the PCUP “because we are also mandated to deliver the basic services to everyone who needs assistance.”

PCUP chairperson Elpidio Jordan Jr. also thanked PAGCOR for its commitment and lauded the 1st Air Reserve Center under Lt. Col. Rifiel Santiago Sotto for facilitating the preparation of the food packs and the Philippine Air Force Civil Military Operations Group (PAFCMOG) led by 2nd Lt. Nelson Ebio for providing the trucks that transported the goods to the PCUP.

Galupo said that the urban poor commission will continue to initiate and partner with other government agencies in an effort to provide the necessary services to our less fortunate. (PCUP PR/ai/mtvn)
