MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) assured the public Wednesday of an adequate supply of rice and meat in the face of the expected increase in demand this coming holiday season.

The DA said the National Rice Program reported an increase in local rice production.

“A big chunk of the supply comes from the locally produced rice, and production of farmers will be enough to meet the demand towards the end of the year,” DA said.

Earlier, Agriculture Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista warned that the price of rice may increase due to the depreciation of the peso against the dollar and the increase in the cost of rice production.

This is amid the warning of the Agricultural Industry Association (SINAG) that the price of rice may increase from P4 to P5 per kilo this October.

The DA ensured the adequate supply of meat in the country.

Based on data from the DA, the demand for chicken supply will reach 1.82 million metric tons (MT) while the local supply of pork is at 1.65 million.

“With the demand for broilers expected at around 1.64 million MT this year, consumers are assured that there will be a generous supply to last up to early 2023,” DA said.

Meanwhile, pork production will reach 1.79 million MT, while local production will reach 1.34 million MT and 0.29 million MT will be imported. (ai/mtvn)
