Vegetable prices hike unavoidable due to Karding, DA official says

MANILA — An official of the Department of Agriculture (DA) said that the price of vegetables in various markets in Metro Manila has increased by up to P20 per kilo after the ravages of super typhoon Karding.

DA Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista insisted that P20 is too high compared to what the vegetables should have been moved.

“Nakita namin, mga P10 hanggang P20… sabi nga namin alam natin na gagalaw ang presyo, pero hindi ganong kalaki,” Evangelista said.

Evangelista added that based on the price of vegetables at the trading posts, the price only moved from P2 to P5 per kilo.

“Yung reference na lang nga natin ay sa trading post, yung cost of transportation dahil yung cost ng transportation, hindi naman tinamaan ang mga kalsada, so yung paggalaw sa palengke, makikipag-ugnayan tayo sa ating market masters, kasi we need the help of the LGUs para makontrol ang presyo,” she added.

The DA previously reported that ‘Karding’ damage to agriculture has reached nearly P3 billion. (ai/mtvm)
