LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Stressing that teaching is the noblest profession in the world, the socialist humanist Maharlika Solidarity (MASO) on Wednesday asked Congress to immediately pass a legislated wage hike of P30,000 to P35,000 monthly for both public and private school teachers.

This developed as Davao City Congressman Paolo “Polong” Duterte filed House Bill 4697, which provides teachers scholarships for their graduate and post-graduate studies and will be applicable in all state universities and colleges (SUCs).

“We support the move of some lawmakers that entry level for public school teachers or Teacher I should be Salary Grade 15 or P35,097 and at least P30,000 for private school teachers to help them cope up with high prices of commodities nowadays and to have a dignified living,” MASO said in a statement.

Founded by a descendant of Lapu-Lapu on July 7, 2022, which coincided with the foundation anniversary of the Katipunan, MASO lamented that some teachers are forced to become overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) because of their low salaries compared to teachers in other countries.

Meanwhile, under HB 4697 of the Vice President ‘s brother-legislator, the applicant-teacher to be eligible for the scholarship should be in active duty for at least two consecutive years immediately prior to the date of application for the grant.

It also provides that scholarships under HB 4697 cover teachers, guidance counselors, school librarians, industrial arts and/or vocational instructors, and other persons performing supervisory and/or administrative functions either on a full-time or part-time basis in public schools, colleges, and universities.

Furthermore, Polong Duterte’s proposal also includes the provision of educational cash assistance to children of teachers enrolled in college courses in state universities and colleges (SUCs). (ai/mtvn)
