MANILA — Congress has already forwarded to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for his signature of the bills related to the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections and so with the subscriber identity module (SIM) registration measure.
First, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri and Speaker Martin Romualdez led the ceremonial signing of the two proposals before turning them over to Presidential Legislative Liaison Office Secretary Mark Leandro Mendoza who will send the documents to Marcos.
“This (SIM Registration Act) may be the first legislative measure to be signed into law by President Bongbong Marcos. Once enacted into law, this will be our first line of defense against scammers, con artists, and criminal elements who use cellphones and other electronic communication gadgets for nefarious activities,” Romualdez said.
Under the proposal, subscribers will have to register their SIM before activation.
Existing subscribers will also have to register their SIM within 180 days of the law taking effect.
Meanwhile, the barangay and SK polls are scheduled to be held on the last Monday of October 2023 instead of December 2023. (ai/mtvn)
