QUEZON CITY, Metro Manila — Noting the importance of housing and livelihood for the country’s marginalized sectors, particularly the urban poor, Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) chairperson and chief-executive-officer Undersecretary Elpidio Jordan Jr. lauded efforts of local government units in Iloilo, Negros Occidental and Capiz to intensify their socialized housing programs that would help many of our homeless countrymen.
According to reports, in Iloilo City, Bacolod City in Negros Occidental and Roxas City in Capiz, socialized housing units will be constructed for the homeless and those living in danger zones and needing relocation with the support of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).
“For the past several decades, the lack of decent housing remains a big concern that warrants government attention because the majority of our people cannot afford to have their own homes. In this, we need a more integrated approach in addressing our housing needs and as part of the government, the efforts to solve the housing problem must be intensified and coordinated with all government agencies involved,” Usec. Jordan pointed out.
“Hopefully, the DHSUD, which was only created during the previous Duterte administration, can pave the way for the government to better address urbanization and its challenges with greater efficiency and capacitate local government units to effectively respond to the growing needs of urban and rural poor dwellers,” he added.
The undersecretary opined that the government should invest properly and strategically so that construction and housing, which are key engines of job creation, would get the attention it really needs.
“For our part in the PCUP, we are committed to fulfilling the mandate given to us with regards to linking accredited urban poor organizations to the pertinent government agency, such as the DHSUD, that could help them solve their problems, which includes housing and livelihood,” he enthused.
DHSUD sources revealed that the agency aims to address the country’s housing needs and other related issues through an efficient and holistic national shelter program that would shepherd a more coordinated housing effort.
“The DHSUD has a very important role in President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s program for poverty alleviation because it merges the functions of the previous Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) and the planning and regulatory functions of the previous Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB),” Usec. Jordan explained.
Presently, the DHSUD is at the forefront of the Marcos administration’s effort to assist in providing homes for the homeless, and the cities of Iloilo, Bacolod, and Roxas are lucky to be included in the housing program of the national government and DHSUD will be there to assist them all the way.
