MANILA — Sen. Cynthia Villar is upset with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for continuing with the reclamation projects in Manila Bay.

Villar is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

In the hearing of the 2023 DENR budget this Tuesday, Sen. Nancy Binay also cited with concern the state of Manila Bay dolomite beach and the reclamation area in Manila Bay.

From her office in the Senate, she said that she can see ships dumping sand.

“Parang si President Duterte I think it was 2019 or 2020 he said there is moratorium on the reclamation sa may Manila Bay but kasi sa may office ko ang view ko ay yung Manila Bay and everyday parang may nakikita ho akong barko doon na naghuhulog ng buhangin and I was just in the office of our Senate President, doon po sa view niya may area na may island na,” Binay said.

But DENR Usec Atty. Jonas Leones said nothing more will be done at dolomite beach because the project has been completed.

“For the Manila Bay rehabilitation, tuloy-tuloy po yung ating rehabilitation but for the dolomite area we have already completed the dolomite area, placing of the sand.”

Villar, on the other hand, became angry and dismayed when the reclamation project and ECC in Cavite were discussed.

She asked DENR Director for Environmental Management Bureau Engr. William Cuñado in specific areas on Coastal Road in Cavite with ECC already.

“Itong Coastal Road, Madam chair, 846 hectares… In Cavitex, Madam chair. Cavite,” Cuñado said.

But Villar did not like the officer’s answer.

“Saan ang Cavitex? Ang laki ng Cavitex. Cavitex starts from Parañaque, umikot papuntang Cavite. So saan to? Ako wag nyong gagawin sa akin yan. * niyo. Dumating ka dito galing ka sa Cebu, ginulo mo kaming lahat,” the senator said. (ai/mtvn)
