Norway’s century-old ship docks at Pier 15, Port of Manila

MANILA — The 108-year-old Norwegian tall ship “Statsraad Lehmkuhl” docked at the Port of Manila-Pier 15 on Wednesday (12 Oct 2022) and the mere sight of the former training ship struck Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) Administrator Hernani Fabia with awe.

“I was impressed by the colorful history of this Norwegian tall ship which is sailing around the world as part of its voyage called, One Ocean Expedition,” Bautista said.

The Norwegian ship arrived in Manila in time for the Norway-Phillippines Maritime and Energy conference.

“Since 1914, when this vessel was built, it has changed ownership several times and used by the Germans during World War II. The ship was named after former Norwegian cabinet minister Kristofer Lehmkuhl,” Bautista added.

The ship survived two world wars and then it was transformed into a training ship equipped with modern features.

It can be powered by either wind or electric batteries, uniquely world-class by any standard.
