PBBM signs law postponing barangay, SK elections

MANILA — It’s now official.

The December 2022 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections will be held next year, on October 2023.

This is after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed into law the bill postponing the December 2022 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to October 2023.

Marcos signed Republic Act (RA) 11935 last Monday, October 10, a copy of the law published in the Official Gazette showed, but Malacanang only released to the press this Wednesday.

“There shall be a synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, which shall be held on the last Monday of October 2023 and every three years thereafter,” the new law read.

The law further says that the term of office of officials elected in the 2023 barangay and SK elections shall commence at noon of November 30 following their election.

“Until their successors shall have been duly elected and qualified, all incumbent barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials shall remain in office unless sooner removed or suspended for cause,” the law added. (Ismael Amigo/mtvn)
