QUEZON CITY — Interior Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” C. Abalos, Jr. considered the surrender of the alleged Percy Lapid gunman as a major breakthrough achieved by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“In just 15 days, we have already achieved a major breakthrough in the Percy Lapid case. Salamat sa PNP sa pagtutok sa kasong ito at sa mabilis na imbestigasyon kaya napuwersa ang main suspect na sumuko (Thank you PNP for focusing in this case and your quick investigation forced the main suspect to surrender),” Abalos said.

The DILG chief today (Tuesday) presented to the media the suspect identified as Joel Salve Estorial, 39 years old, a native of Leyte, and a resident of New Capitol Estates 1 in Quezon City during a press conference this morning in Camp Crame.

Abalos said the police are also conducting follow-up operations to arrest Israel and Edmon Dimaculangan and a certain Orlando/Orly whom Estorial named as his cohorts in the commission of the crime.

“Sumuko na rin kayo dahil hindi titigil ang pulisya hanggang hindi kayo nasusukol (You must also surrender because the police will not stop until you were arrested),” said Abalos.

Estorial voluntarily surrendered to the PNP Special Investigation Task Group Percy Lapid out of fear for his personal safety following public disclosure of CCTV footage showing his face during the incident and naming him as the primary person of interest.

Abalos said the suspect himself led the police to recover the gun he used in the commission of the crime and forensic results revealed a positive match result with the gun used against Lapid as well as the jacket used by Estorial during the crime.

“With the surrender of Estorial, we now have the key to unravel the motive and identify those who plotted the liquidation of Mr. Lapid. With the forensic results, we also now have a strong case against the suspect,” he said.

Percy Lapid, a renowned radio commentator, was fatally shot on October 3, 2022, in Talon Dos, Las Piñas City. (ai/mtvn)
