QUEZON CITY, Metro Manila — Stressing the important role of Local Government Units (LGUs) in the poverty alleviation program of the Marcos administration, Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor chairperson and chief-executive-officer Undersecretary Elpidio Jordan Jr. has called on Local Government Executives (LGEs) to join in its first-ever LGU Forum scheduled on October 25 in Quezon City.
The former municipal councilor of Aroroy town in Masbate pointed out that without the support of the LGUs and their respective LGEs, it would be difficult to accomplish the pro-poor advocacies of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. that would bring progress to the whole country.
“It is a must that we unite as this has been the call of our beloved President even as early as when he was campaigning for the presidency and now that he is our chief executive. Only when we stand as one will we be successful in fulfilling our mandate of serving our people,” Usec. Jordan enthused.
To give emphasis to this, the PCUP chairperson quoted from the late former Emperor of Ethiopia: “History teaches us that unity is strength, and cautions us to submerge and overcome our differences in the quest for common goals, to strive, with all our combined strength, for the path to true . . . brotherhood and unity.”
The rationale of PCUP’s LGU Forum is for the agency to present its programs and initiatives for the country’s marginalized sectors, particularly the urban poor, and the protection of their rights under an equitable policy and observance of the law.
Aside from this, the forum will also be presenting its program of activities for the upcoming Urban Poor Solidarity Week (UPSW) in December. (ai/mtvn)
