MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will appoint a new head of the Department of Health (DOH) as soon as the COVID-19 situation returns to normal.

In an interview, Marcos said that the priority right now is to eliminate the existence of public health emergency and state of calamity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Marcos, this is important so that all businesses can be opened and the economy can return to normal.

“We have to make the Philippines more hospitable to travelers — both business and tourists — and it does not help if we are still under a state of calamity, if we are the only country that still has mask protocol. … Kailangan pa nating ayusin ‘yun,” the Chief Executive said on Thursday.

“We must treat the pandemic no longer, we must treat Covid no longer as an emergency but something that we will have to manage forever. It’s like flu, like pneumonia. Nandyan lagi yan pero mag-ingat tayo para hindi tayo magkasakit,” he added.

Marcos said that the government is doing everything to normalize the COVID-19 situation in the country and to encourage more investors to invest in the Philippines.

Last July, Marcos appointed DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire as officer-in-charge in the department. (ai/mtvn)
