MANILA — Following the “mysterious” death of an inmate who was the alleged middleman in the still unresolved killing of hard-hitting radio broadcaster Percy Lapid, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla has ordered the preventive suspension of Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director-General Gerald Quitaleg Bantag and the appointment of former Armed Forces chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. as officer-in-charge (OIC).

On Friday, October 21, Remulla claimed that the indefinite suspension order was upon the recommendation of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. who also handpicked Catapang as OIC of BuCor to pave for an impartial investigation on the death of an alleged middleman in the dastardly killing of Percy Lapid — whose real name was Percival Mabasa — at the National Bilibid Prison (NBP).

“I went to the President to tell him about this… he asked me to preventively suspend Undersecretary, Director General Bantag of BuCor, so that there may be a fair [and] impartial investigation on the matter,” Remulla said in a press conference.

Remulla further claimed that he and the President met on Thursday night.

He disclosed that the alleged middleman who died at the NBP on October 18 is known by three names: Crisanto Villamor, Jun Globa Villamor, and Jun Garcia Villamor.

But he bared that another alleged “player/middleman” in the murder of broadcaster Percy Lapid is still in police custody at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Taguig.(ai/mtvn)
