MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Agriculture Western Visayas, to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) through testing of all pig breeding sites in the region.

The order was issued on Sunday when the DA-Western Visayas regional office disclosed at a situation briefing in Bacolod City that cases of ASF had been reported in the region, notably in Iloilo.

According to Marcos, all efforts to stop its spread have already been put in place, including a prohibition on the consumption of pork products in infected areas.

One of the best ways to stop the spread of the virus, according to the Chief Executive, is to test all breeding farms for ASF as soon as possible (ASAP).

The Chief Executive further mentioned that one of the difficulties in treating the virus is that ASF has been known to spread via mosquitoes.

Since the first known outbreak in July 2019, Iloilo and the whole Western Visayas region were among the final few places in the nation to remain ASF-free. (ai/mtvn)
