MANILA — Healthcare remains on top of President Marcos’ agenda, especially in the government’s fight against the coronavirus scourge the Office of the Press Secretary on Wednesday said.

“We need to do that, especially now that we have learned many lessons from this pandemic,” Marcos said in a meeting with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

“It is the time to start. Even in the psychology of our people, they think that we are now managing COVID very well,” he added.

The President also urged a renewed emphasis on issues related to general public health given the rise in occurrences of other ailments.

“[We have to] bring back to other issues that were neglected during the height of the pandemic. There’s so much to do. We have to take care of our people,” the chief executive said.

The WHO director stated that even while new COVID-19 variations continue to appear, the pandemic has taught us many valuable lessons, one of which is how important it is to be well-tested for and prepared for disease outbreaks.

“I don’t think we will need different tools than we have now. It’s a matter of immediately detecting and using tools to stop it,” said Ghebreyesus.

“If we continue to be vigilant, we can solve it. So what I expect is for the future, maybe in the next few months or more, I think we will move forward,” the WHO chief pointed out. (ai/mtvn)
