CEBU CITY — Echoing the patriotic lines “Walang mang-aapi kung walang paaapi” (roughly translated: There are no tyrants when there are no slaves), the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Region 7 has urged the public to be vigilant and have courage in reporting abuse cases, particularly among women and children.
This was stressed by Ligaya Dael, head of House for Girls (HFG) 7, who noted that despite the government’s programs to battle against abuses, many people have succumbed to fears and hesitant to report abuse cases that they themselves have witnessed.
HFG-7 is a DSWD temporary residential facility for abused girls from seven to 17 years old.
Dael stressed that there is nothing to be afraid of since the identity of those who reported the ill treatment would be protected.
She encouraged people to help and speak out, especially children who escaped from their abusive lives.
Meanwhile, DSWD-7 Director Shalaine Lucero disclosed that the agency has at least three centers, including HFG in Cebu, that focus on rehabilitation and rescue of abuse victims.
She said the other two are the Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth and for Children in conflict with the law, apparently referring to those minors recruited and brainwashed by the Maoist CPP-NPA, and the Regional Haven for Women for Abused Women. (ai/mtvn)
