DAVAO CITY — Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte assured those affected by Typhoon Paeng (Nalgae) of government assistance as it is the Marcos administration’s top priority.
At the same time, Duterte expressed her condolences to those who lost their loved ones and she also sympathizes with those who lost their homes and got displaced due to the onslaught of “Paeng”.
“My thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Filipinos who perished because of Typhoon Paeng and the thousands of families left homeless or displaced as it ravaged many parts of the country,” Duterte said.
“The initial assessment of the extent of the devastation left by Paeng is already profoundly disheartening, and recovery is expected to be a heavy undertaking — but the Marcos administration’s priority now is to provide immediate assistance to affected families,” she added.
The vice president said government institutions and Local Government Units are working nonstop and leading emergency operations in response to the crisis brought on by Typhoon Paeng.
Based on earlier reports from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), 31 people perished in Maguindanao and the count might still go up.
According to BARMM Interior and Local Government Minister and Bangsamoro Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence Chief Naguib Sinarimbo the death toll may increase because more reports from the field come in.
Sinarimbo said 16 deaths were reported in the town of Datu Odin, 10 in Datu Blah Sinsuat, and 5 in Datu Upi.
The majority of deaths were attributed to flooding and the rest to landslides as several residents climbed to the roof of their flooded houses waiting to be rescued. (ai/mtvn)
