LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Setting aside their ideological differences, members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) identified with its founding chairman Nur Misuari has extended more than P1 million pesos in cash and in-kind to victims of typhoon “Paeng” as Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) chairman and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Chief Minister Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim has placed the region under a state of calamity.

Reports said BARMM was badly battered by strong winds and heavy rains which caused deadly floods in parts of the Bangsamoro areas and Zamboanga City since Friday dawn, October 28.

“Forty deaths have been recorded while 31 others were reported injured and some 80 to 100 others are still missing,” Ebrahim said.

According to the Facebook page of Philippine Muslim Today (PMT), the seven MNLF members of the Parliament nominated by Nur Misuari to the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) said the tragedy prompted them to come together and pooled resources from their respective offices to help the victims.

They were MNLF Vice-Chairman and Parliament Deputy Speaker Abdulkarim Tan Misuari, Member of Parliament (MP) Hamid Malik, MP Atty. Randolf Parcasio, MP Tarhata Maglangit, MP Nurredha Misuari, MP Abdulaziz Amenodin, and MP Denmartin Kahalan.

For his part, Ebrahim disclosed that figures from BARMM’s Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (Readi) placed the death toll at 40, the bulk of which is in Maguindanao province.

He said the focus of their current rescue and retrieval operations in Maguindanao is the coastal village of Kusiong in Datu Odin Sinsuat town where a landslide occurred.

Some residents have expressed fears that many people might be buried alive under mud and rocks due to landslides. (ai/mtvn)
