Sen. Hontiveros bats for immediate approval of bills giving protection to delivery riders, gig economy workers

MANILA — Following the discovery of one delivery rider dead on his parked motorcycle, Senator Risa Hontiveros is again pushing for the immediate adoption of the law strengthening protections of food delivery riders.

Let his death be a wake-up call to our colleagues in the legislature to immediately act on pending bills that will make sure that the rights and welfare of the increasing number of gig economy workers are upheld,” Hontiveros said.

In addition, Hontiveros requested that Lalamove assist Escote’s family because Escote passed away while doing his job-related duties as a delivery rider.

Hontiveros claimed to have received a letter from Escote’s family asking for help in submitting their complaint on the website.

Last month, Hontiveros filed Senate Bill No. 1373 or the Protektadong Online Workers, Entrepreneurs, Riders at Raketera (POWERR) Act seeking to protect the rights and welfare of gig economy workers, including delivery riders and freelancers, who are facing low pay and precarious conditions at work.
