MANILA–Senator Risa Hontiveros urged President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. not to imitate the “over-borrowing” tendencies of the Duterte administration.
The senator cited two projects namely Kaliwa Dam (P18-billion) project and the South Luzon Long Haul Rail Project from Calamba to Matnog in Sorsogon (P171-billion) during budget debates.
As the Chinese investors in both projects have not followed through on their promise to lend money to the Philippine government to finance these projects, both projects are currently in limbo.
According to Hontiveros, the delay “is actually an unexpected blessing.”
“We should do everything so government avoids taking on the heavy loan burden itself,” Hontiveros stressed.
