MANILA — A fish traders’ group said it expects an increase in the price of galunggong in the face of a lack of supply due to the enforced fishing ban from November 1 to January 2022.

Association of Fresh Fish Traders of the Philippines President Roderick ‘John John’ Santos said that 90 percent of the fish supplied to markets in Metro Manila and Luzon come from Palawan waters.

A fishing ban was implemented to allow the fish to reproduce.

According to Santos, although the importation of 25,000 metric tons of frozen galunggong, and other fish will help, its price is expected to increase.

“Inaasahan ang bahagyang pagggalaw sa presyo ng galunggong,” Santos said.

Santos added that consumers have the option to buy tilapia and bangus to fill the lack of galunggong supply.

Based on the monitoring of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the price of galunggong in the markets is pegged at P180 to P260 per kilo.
