Police mourns death of fellow officer, injury of another during hot pursuit

QUEZON CITY — The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) is mourning the death of a member of their SWAT Team who responded to a report of indiscriminate firing on November 13 (Monday) in this city.

The incident also left one injured police officer.

PBGEN Nicolas D Torre III, identified the deceased police officer as Police Corporal Noel Ogano, while the injured colleague was PLTCOL Jerry Castillo, both assigned to QCPD SWAT.

Initial investigation shows that suspect identified as Martin Marlot Nuñez, 42 y/o, former Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) cadet, and a resident of Brgy. 177, Caloocan City was under the influence of liquor and allegedly involved in indiscriminate firing transpired at about 10:30 AM of November 13, 2022 at Block 31, Lot 3, Bougainvilla St., Maligaya Park, Subd., Brgy. Pasong Putik Proper, Quezon City that caused alarm and fear to the residents in the area.

The said incident was immediately reported by witness Jayvee Calim to Pasong Putik Police Station (PS 16).

Thereafter, PS 16 operatives together with QCPD SWAT Team led by PLTCOL Jerry Castillo immediately conducted a hot pursuit operation against the suspect Nuñez.

In coordination with Caloocan City Police Station, joint operatives proceeded to the suspect’s house located at Palmera Homes, Nova East, Maligaya Parkland, Brgy. 177, Caloocan City.

Responding police officers asked him to voluntarily surrender, however, during the negotiation, he suddenly fired his handgun towards the operatives which prompted the latter to retaliate and resulted in the neutralization of suspect Nuñez and death of PCpl Ogano while the QCPD SWAT team leader PLTCOL Castillo was injured.

PBGEN Torre III expressed his sincere condolences to the family of PCpl Ogano and lauded his bravery and his ultimate sacrifice in the performance of his duty as a public servant.

“Ikinalulungkot ng buong kapulisan ng QCPD na humantong ang insidenteng ito sa pagkamatay ng isang kasamahan natin sa serbisyo. Ang buong Team QCPD ay nakikiramay sa pamilyang naulila ni PCpl Ogano at handa kaming magbigay ng anumang tulong na maaari naming maibigay (The whole police force of QCPD was saddened that this incident resulted to the death of one of our colleagues. The whole QCPD Team is extending our condolences to the bereaved family of PCpl Ogano and we are ready to provide any assistance that we can give).” PBGEN Torre III said.

Meanwhile, NCRPO chief PBGen Jonnel C Estomo also expressed the same sentiment with the whole metro cops over the demise of one brave member who sacrificed himself to protect the people and promote peace. (ai/mtvn)
