CEBU CITY — Heeding the marching orders of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to intensify anti-smuggling efforts, the Bureau of Customs-Port of Cebu under the leadership of District Collector Elvira Cruz has seized 700 reams of smuggled “United” cigarettes and assorted candies.
Cebu Customs insiders said the smuggled cigarettes valued at P350,000 were loaded inside a delivery van carrying assorted candies were transported by a ferry boat from Zamboanga to Camotes island in northern Cebu when chanced upon by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
It was learned that on Wednesday, November 16, the PCG in Central Visayas turned over the suspected contraband to BOC Port of Cebu after the owner, whose identity was withheld, failed to produce pertinent documents to support the legitimacy of the transport of cigarettes.
District Collector Cruz immediately issued a Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) on the goods based on Section 1113 (a), (f), (k), and (l-1 &5) in relation to Section 118 (f) of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Cruz said under the guidance of Acting Commissioner Yogi Filemon L. Ruiz, the BOC Port of Cebu continues to strengthen its collaboration with other maritime enforcement units to secure the country’s borders against smuggling attempts.
