MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) said at least 31 million COVID-19 shots were wasted because they were not used and the rest expired.

The wasted vaccines were worth P15.6 billion, said DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire.

The official said about 24 million expired and seven million were wasted due to temperature excursions and the other vials were opened and not used.

“This 31 million po ‘pag tinignan po natin ‘yung kabuuan, almost 70 percent po dito ay ‘yun pong na-procure ng private sector at saka ng local governments,” Vergeire said.

Vergeire previously said that the shelf life of the vaccine is only good for six months from the date of bottling.

According to DOH data, 73.6 million Filipinos had received their COVID-19 vaccinations in full as of November 17.

Meanwhile, only 20.8 million Filipinos had received their first booster.
