MANILA — Cases of verbal abuse, favoritism, and general human resources mismanagement that had led some staff to leave Caritas Caritas Internationalis (CI) apparently prompted Pope Francis to fire its entire leadership, including Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, diminishing in effect of his chances to become Vatican’s first Filipino Pope.

It was gathered that Tagle, who was nominally president of Caritas, was not involved in the day-to-day operations since his main job at the Vatican was head of the Church’s worldwide missionary arm.

Pope Francis’ unexpected move involved the executives of Caritas Internationalis (CI), a Vatican-based confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social services organizations working in more 200 countries.

Reuters reported that one CI staffer revealed cases of verbal abuse, favoritism, and general human resources mismanagement that had led some staff to leave Caritas which is based in a Vatican-owned building in Rome.

Tagle, touted as the most possible successor of Pope Francis, will step down as president but remain in a new role to help the commissioner keep up relations with national Caritas offices and prepare for election of a new leadership in 2023. (ai/mtvn)
