MANILA — Alarmed by reports that a Chinese syndicate forced some overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to work as scammers, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople has ordered to help assist the distressed OFWs.

DMW Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac bared that the DMW chief directed assistance to concerned overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

On Monday, November 21, Hontiveros revealed in her privileged speech at the Senate that 12 OFWs were rescued from a Chinese syndicate based in Myanmar through the help of a non-government organization (NGO) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Citing the testimonies of the rescued OFWs, Hontiveros said the 12 Filipinos were recruited as customer service representatives or data encoders and were supposed to work in Thailand.

Hontiveros exposed that a Chinese syndicate allegedly dragged the hapless OFWs to Myanmar, where they will scam other people and use cryptocurrency as a front.

Heeding Ople’s directive, Cacdac said the DMW has been coordinating with the DFA and other concerned government agencies to assist OFWs in such situations.
