Tulfo calls for special airfare rate of returning OFWs affected by the NAIA crisis

MANILA — Senator Raffy Tulfo appealed to airline companies on Wednesday for them to give a special rate in airfare to returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and save their hard-earned money for their families amid the sudden surge in airfares and other charges owing to the massive technical glitch that struck at the country’s gateway to the world.

Tulfo averred that the fare price in and outside the country has almost doubled due to the sudden breakdown of the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance System for Air Traffic Management or (CNS/ATM) of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) around noon last January 1, 2023.

This was also the reason why many OFWs got delayed on their long-planned vacations in the country to be with their families at least on New Year’s Day.

“It would be unfair for our OFWs to absorb the fault or negligence of CAAP for the maintenance of their CNS/ATM system. Marami sa kanila isang beses lang o mas malimit pa makauwi sa isang taon. Yung pera na sana pangpasalubong o ‘di kaya pang suporta sa kanilang pamilya ay pilitang napunta na lang sa pamasahe,” Tulfo said.

According to an airline company that communicated with the Office of Senator Raffy Tulfo, the sudden increase in fares is said to be caused by the demand-based algorithm that airlines use to impose airfare increases.
