MANILA — Around 500 senior Philippine National Police officials have so far tendered their courtesy resignations since Thursday following the call of Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr. for them to do so as part of a “cleansing” process in the controversy-rocked agency.

The mass courtesy resignations also included PNP chief Gen Rodolfo Azurin Jr. who tendered his courtesy resignation from the service a day after Abalos made his appeal.

On Wednesday last week (04 January 2023), SILG Abalos called on all police colonels and generals to submit their courtesy resignation even as he also created a five-man unit that will accordingly launch a probe on each and every PNP’s effort to cleanse the PNP ranks.

These Police Generals and Colonels expressed their support for the PNP’s internal cleansing program and filed their courtesy resignation.

Among the officers who promptly responded to the appeal of SILG were the members of the PNP Command Group, Regional Directors, Commanders of Area Police Commands, Provincial and City Directors of 17 regions, and Directors of PNP National Support Units.

“It is essential that the police force maintains the trust and confidence of the community it serves. This can only be achieved if the police are held to the highest standards of conduct and integrity, and if allegations of wrongdoing are thoroughly investigated and addressed in a transparent and fair manner,” PGen Azurin said.

According to PGen Azurin, the majority of those who belong to the remaining third-level officers have already signified support to the appeal of SILG, and are expected to submit their respective courtesy resignations in the coming days.

“Ito ay nagpapakita lamang na ang ating puwersa ay nagkakaisa upang sugpuin ang iilang tiwali sa ating hanay. Tayo ay nakahandang humarap sa mga gagawing pagsusuri at buong tapang na tatanggapin ang isang hamon para sa integridad at imahe ng buong PNP,” PGen Azurin added.
