LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The day after 19 local government units (LGUs) suspended classes due to heavy rains spawned by a low-pressure area (LPA) in the entire Cebu province, Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on Thursday ordered the suspension of classes in public schools but left the discretion to the private school administrators.

On Wednesday, January 11, both public and private school students were drenched by heavy rains as classes in this city were not suspended despite an early morning warning from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Belatedly posted on his official Facebook page, Chan said he decided to suspend classes in his city on Thursday, January 12, due to the heavy rainfall warning issued by weather officials.

But on Wednesday, January 11, classes were already suspended in the towns of Alegria, Argao, Bantayan, Barili, Compostela, Cordova, Daanbantayan, Madridejos, Medellin, Pilar, Poro, Ronda, San Remigio, San Francisco, Santander, Sta. Fe, Sogod, Tuburan and Tudela, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said.

However, officials of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that the bad weather being experienced in Cebu province may last only until Friday, Jan. 13. (ai/mtvn)
