PCUP, DILG agree to construct urban poor satellite offices nationwide

QUEZON CITY — In an effort to cascade programs and services of the agency promptly to the urban poor sector throughout the country, Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor chairperson Undersecretary Elpidio R. Jordan Jr. and Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr. of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) agreed to build urban poor satellite offices nationwide.

This, after Usec. Jordan made a courtesy visit with the DILG chief last Tuesday (17 January 2023) at the DILG Napolcom Center in Quezon City.

During his courtesy call, Jordan laid out PCUP’s mandate of directly linking the marginalized and underprivileged sectors to the programs and services of the government with which the DILG chief readily agreed to help the agency.

Undersecretary Jordan’s initiative to build satellite offices all over the country in participation with the Urban Poor Affairs Offices is aimed to generate data and to establish a database for the urban poor that would be beneficial to both the PCUP and the Local Government Units (LGUs).

“The urban poor problem of the country can be resolved if there is the participation of all stakeholders, particularly local government units (LGUs) and we believe that the DILG, with the help of the honorable Secretary Benhur Abalos, can help us achieve our one goal to alleviate poverty in the country,” Undersecretary Jordan stressed.

DILG Secretary Abalos expressed his support and determination to assist PCUP in strengthening its relationship with Local Government leaders of the country as well as with the League of Governors and the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) to deliver its mandate to uphold and protect the rights of the urban poor sector.

The formal signing of the memorandum of agreement between the PCUP and the DILG is expected to be made in the first quarter of the year.

“It is high time that we give our urban poor the opportunity to have a good and decent life. No one should be left behind,” Undersecretary Jordan said.

PCUP Participatory Governance Unit head, Ms. Catalina E. De Polonia; and PCUP Special Asst. for Internal and External Affairs Mr. Jimmy Uy also attended the meeting. (ai/mtvn)
