FAKE NEWS: Bayambang LGU debunks reports on 5 onion farmers who committed suicide

MANILA — The local government of Bayambang has issued an official statement debunking reports on mainstream media claiming at least five (5) farmers accordingly took their own lives due to huge losses amid the rising cost of onions.

Bayambang Mayor Nina Jose-Quiambo said that no such incident has ever occurred in the town of Bayambang.

Bayambang, officially the Municipality of Bayambang, is a first-class municipality in the province of Pangasinan whose population is pegged at around 135,000.

A leading national daily claimed, “despondency over their huge losses in onion farming has reportedly driven five farmers in Bayambang, Pangasinan to commit suicide.”

It was Elvin Jerome Laceda, president of the Young Farmers Challenge Club of the Philippines, who made the allegation during an inquiry by the Senate Committee on Food and Agriculture on the phenomenal skyrocketing prices of onions in the country the newspaper said.
