MANILA — Gone are the days when one cries while cutting onions as Filipinos now cry at their staggering prices reaching P300 to P450 per kilo which is higher compared to Switzerland and other countries that even foreign media took notice that onions in the Philippines are more expensive than meat.

It was gathered that in Switzerland, where President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. recently attended the World Economic Forum, a kilo of red onions costs 1.90 Swiss francs or P113.

In Canada, a kilo of red onions costs only 5.49 Canadian dollars, or roughly P222.

The minimum wage in Canada, however, ranges from 13 to 15 Canadian dollars (P527.41 to P608.55) per hour, depending on the province.

Meanwhile, in Japan and the United Kingdom, a kilo of onions only costs P50. P48 in Denmark and 1 Riyal or P14 in Saudi Arabia.

It was also learned that in neighboring Malaysia, red onions cost P32 per kilo, and white onions cost P60 per kilo. It costs 60 Baht or over P100 in Thailand, 1.85 dollars or P75 in Singapore, and P77 in New Zealand.

However, economist Renato Reside Jr. put the blame on the country’s agriculture sector for being “non-productive.”

“Part of our problem sa Pilipinas is hindi productive ‘yung agriculture sector natin. Yung mga planting methods, planting and harvesting means and methods and also yung susceptibility ng produce natin sa climate dahil hindi masyado productive agriculture natin, bumababa ang supply sa atin,” Reside Jr. pointed out.

Some people have reportedly rushed to limited Kadiwa Stores to get onions at only 100-peso levels.

But the previous P170 per kilo of red onions in the Kadiwa market on Elliptical Road in Quezon City has now zoomed to P200.

Unit prices of onions peaked at as high as P750 a kilo during the Holiday Season just passed. (ai/mtvn)
